Coca Cola and Pepsi will change the recipe in California because according to new legislation they would have to put a "cancer warning" on their packaging because of the amount of 4-methylimidazole in the drinks. Though both the companies and FDA claim it is nearly impossible to drink the amount of coke to get in the danger zone.

How smart usage of sequencing can reduce the medical bill in rare disease cases

They knew because of the death of an earlier child that this family had an elevated risk for SCID (in this case a mutation in the IL7R gene). By using sequencing at birth they could determine that the baby had the same disease and within 24h the correct treatment was picked and within 16 days applied.

Not only did this save the baby's life it also saved lots of money:
'Kendra's total medical bill was US$12,000 — compared with $500,000 for her brother. And she is doing well today.'

'“This is what genomic medicine is supposed to do,” Strauss says. “If you know which people are at risk, you can determine a diagnosis before a child is 24 hours old. You can come up with a treatment based on the genetics.”'

How several SNPs determine the effect of your workout

Interesting find in in the following paper (http://goo.gl/S4FR5) they found out that there are 11 SNPs that can predict how much your VO2max is increased when doing exercise.

The found that these 11 SNPs are capable of explaining 23% of the variance measurable for gain of VO2max for people doing exercise. Soon enough there will be a genetic test available to test yourself (though most SNPs are also in the common +23andMe genotypes, so if you're a bit geeky you can find out yourself with this more common commercial genotype service!).

For the people in the UK (or people with a UK VPN) the BBC spent some time on this topic in the latest Horizon. They also showed new types of exercise that can help you getting the health benefits of sporting in a fraction of the time you'd spent right now (like 3 minutes per week!), which sounds really similar to Tabata workouts.
